Hawks heading towards Nova Scotia from the southwest coast were observed for the first time in October 2022

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOS

One of the avian highlights of October is the migration of hawks. After the summer breeding season, young hawks start exploring the great big world on their own. There are hawks with us all winter but the majority of those that nest in the province leave to spend the winter in more southern climates. That brings up the questions of how do they do it? Hawks are fast fliers over short distances. They are champions of taking advantage of thermals to float them above the land.

During the morning of Oct. 22, we were spectators to a spectacular migration of 265 sharp-shinned hawks. Over a couple of hours we counted them as they came in high from the north. They crossed the Trans-Canada Highway at the Red Rocks Road junction. They gained altitude over a tall rounded hill then kept on going. Staying high in the sky they disappeared off in the direction of Nova Scotia.

Regular migrating species during October besides those already mentioned are the northern goshawk, rough-legged hawk, American kestrel and peregrine falcon. Some of these are less common than others. During the mid-fall migration period, a wide variety of rare birds are possible. Most spectacular this past week was a fork-tailed flycatcher found by Ed Hayden at Biscay Bay on the southern Avalon Peninsula. It was living dangerously, catching flies on the warm surface of the highway.
