Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is under pressure to explain the 'hypocrisy' over his 'broken' promise to Australians on superannuation while he is set to take home a massive Parliamentary pension.

Senior Coalition MP Simon Birmingham has accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of being responsible for a “broken promise” as his government appears ready to roll out major superannuation reforms.Mr Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers have opened the door to major changes to super this week – despite ruling out any move on Australians’ retirement funds before last year’s Federal Election - including possible cuts to the tax concession and limits on individuals accessing their funds early.

Senator Simon Birmingham appeared on Sky News Australia on Friday morning for an exclusive interview where he called on Mr Albanese to quickly clarify what changes his government intended to make and how they would impact superannuation accounts. Under the Parliamentary Contributory Superannuation Scheme politicians who entered parliament before 2004 are entitled to a taxpayer-funded pension once they serve eight years.

Mr Albanese – if he was to retire immediately – stands to collect at least $162,795 per annum as he has served for more than 18 years as an MP, according to analysis from the Institute of Public Affairs. Mr Swan has been a major vocal supporter of plans to cap a $3 million cap on superannuation which would have little impact on his retirement due to his entitlement to a healthy parliamentary pension.

PM promises no major changes to super ahead of May budgetPM promises no major changes to super ahead of May budgetSky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says it unknown whether the federal budget in May will contain changes to superannuation tax concessions. “Treasurer Jim Chalmers obviously wants a tax change, leading to more paying tax on their superannuation contributions,” Mr Clennell said. “Perhaps it was a ‘non-core promise’ before the election, when the PM and Treasurer said they were not going to meddle with super.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the government was not looking at major changes to superannuation and said this was his commitment prior to the election, during his address to the National Press Club on Wednesday. “This looks like a carbon copy of last year – before a budget – where the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese allowed the Treasurer to flag potential changes to the stage three tax cuts, only for those changes to not be included in the October budget,' Mr Clennell said.
