Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says it unknown whether the federal budget in May will contain changes to superannuation tax concessions.

“Treasurer Jim Chalmers obviously wants a tax change, leading to more paying tax on their superannuation contributions,” Mr Clennell said.

“Perhaps it was a ‘non-core promise’ before the election, when the PM and Treasurer said they were not going to meddle with super.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the government was not looking at major changes to superannuation and said this was his commitment prior to the election, during his address to the National Press Club on Wednesday.

“This looks like a carbon copy of last year – before a budget – where the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese allowed the Treasurer to flag potential changes to the stage three tax cuts, only for those changes to not be included in the October budget,” Mr Clennell said.
