British champion Luke Greenbank has been sensationally disqualified after winning his 200m backstroke heat on Wednesday night. Greenbank, who won bronze in Tokyo, thought he had done enough to book his spot in the semi-finals after touching first in the fourth and final heat. But after leaving the pool, he looked up at the scoreboard to see there was a review. It was then he realised he had been disqualified for staying under the water for too long after the start.

“Absolutely devastating for him,” Australian swimming great Giaan Rooney said in commentary. “He was beside himself once the DQ came up against the board and that’s a big shock. As I said, the bronze medallist in Tokyo is not progressing through to the semi-finals in the men’s 200m backstroke.” Australian legend Ian Thorpe said it was an unforgivable mistake. “And it wasn’t just a little bit, it was a significant amount past ,” he said on Nine.
