AS part of the efforts to intensify breast cancer awareness, an expert said that breast health should be included in the Department of Education (DepEd) curriculum.

'I think the most effective way of raising awareness is to partner with DepEd,' said Dr. Jorge Ignacio, the head of the Philippine General Hospital Cancer Institute, at a Kapihan sa Manila Bay media forum on Wednesday. He said that the target of the awareness should start in a child's formative years, which is between 0 to 8 years old.

Including breast health in the curriculum will help the students learn to look out for signs and symptoms as early as possible.'A woman could have breast cancer as early as 15 years old,' Antolin said.Meanwhile, Ignacio said that early detection and early treatment of breast cancer increases the chance of recovery. 'Late diagnosis can only lead to higher cost of treatment,' he added. Most breast cancer patients in the country were diagnosed late because treatments are expensive.
