Statement urges residents and visitors to stay away from flood control channels and waterways
Local rivers, creeks and streams are flowing at normal levels for the moment, but there may be localized flooding in areas with poor drainage depending on today's weather, according to a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority.
The forecast is calling for moderate and possibly heavy rainfall this afternoon and evening due to thunderstorms. As a result, flood-control channels will experience a rise in water levels. "It is important to remember that the water in rivers, streams, and channels will be fast flowing during and after the rainfall event," the statement added.
The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority says it will continue to closely monitor stream flows across the watershed. Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from the flood-control channels and all waterways. Flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from waterways during this time.
