THE Bureau of Customs (BoC) has started releasing the balikbayan boxes of roughly 200 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) stuck in the warehouse for almost a year.
Sen. Rafael 'Raffy' Tulfo, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers, requested BoC Commissioner Buenvenido Rubio to help his staff assist the OFWs, resulting in the release of their balikbayan boxes.Rowena Agtarap and Jennifer Yanong went on September 12 to the Senate office of Senator Tulfo seeking help regarding their unreleased balikbayan boxes.
The following day, Tulfo's staff accompanied the complainants to BoC where they met with Michael Fermin, the acting deputy commissioner for International Administration Group.Fermin opened the container van to confirm that their luggage was still there. He promised to help process the documents for the speedy release of their boxes.The distribution of 750 balikbayan boxes started Thursday. More than 30 families have already received the luggage, which will continue Friday, October 27.
