In this 'stream of consciousness ... perhaps in keeping with the swirling snow,' Bob Wakeham reflects on boozing with CODCO at the Hotel Newfoundland and his father's mid-storm trips to the Gander Co-op.
A City of St. John’s snowplow passes pedestrians on Lemarchant Road Tuesday morning, Feb. 14.Even for an unabashed agnostic like myself, there’s something almost spiritual about viewing a mighty Newfoundland blizzard from the comfort of a cocoon-like environment created through the pure heat and the aesthetics of a wood stove’s roaring fire.
But, by the gods, so to speak, there was, at the very least, postcard imagery in our home atop the hills of Flatrock on Tuesday, Feb. 14 as nature delivered a four-star, stormy performance outside. Inside, Mister curled up in front of the stove, my wife Heather did her hypnotic knitting magic, and I sipped on a cup of tea at the laptop table.
First off, the storm itself prompted my few remaining neurons to recall blizzards of the past that have stood out for one reason or another, including a childhood memory of watching through the picture window of our house in Gander as my father struggled to make his way through waist-deep snow up Balbo Street while carrying several bags of groceries he had bought at the Co-op Store, about 200 yards away.
When the old man finally made his way to the house, and collapsed in the front hall, my siblings and I gave him a rousing cheer, and Dad, always in search of applause, whether on stage with his theatre group,, or not, loved the attention, and did or said nothing to dissuade us from thinking he had just returned from an exploration of the Arctic with Capt. Bob Bartlett.
