The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Thursday cautioned the public against the proliferation of fraudulent social media accounts posing as immigration personnel to mislead their clients into transacting with them.

BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco issued the warning amid reports that scammers have been posing as immigration lawyers and legal officers by creating Facebook profiles using their employees’ photos, badges, and even the logo of the bureau.

“It is illegal to assume the identity of others, more so to demand money from anyone using the government’s name,” he said in a press statement.
