National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. claimed top honors in the amateur section of the 3rd Laos International Chess Open 2024 held at the Parkson@Naga Mall in Vientiane, Laos from September 1 to 6, 2024.
The former top player of Rizal Technological University scored five victories and four draws to finish with 7.0 points and rule the standard chess competition that drew players from seven countries. Mark Gabriel Usman, also from the Philippines, placed second with 6.5 points while Bui Ngoc Phuong Nghi of Vietnam settled for third place, also with 6.5 points.
'I would like to express my gratitude to my coach FIDE Master Robert Suelo Jr. , to her wife Mers Lodronio Suelo and to ALC Group of Companies chairman and CEO D. Edgard Cabangon for supporting my International chess campaign,' said the 47-year-old Bernardino.Bernardino is fresh from winning the second edition of the IIEE Bayanihan Greenfield District blitz chess tournament last month at the Pavilion Mall, Greenfield District in Mandaluyong City.
