BERMUDA - Hurricane Ernesto churned towards Bermuda on Friday as a Category 2 storm packing powerful winds and likely to produce life-threatening flooding and storm surges in the British island territory.Ernesto, centered about 125 miles south-southwest of the archipelago at 5 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time , was producing sustained winds of up to 100 mph and had the potential to drop up to 9 inches of rain, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Ernesto was crawling at roughly 13 mph on a north-northeast trek, the Miami-based hurricane center said.Bermuda, a collection of 181 small islands clustered more than 600 miles off the Carolina coast, can expect hurricane conditions to persist until Sunday, National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan said in an online briefing.Fewer than a dozen hurricanes have made direct landfall on Bermuda, according to records dating to the 1850s.
