The former head coach is back in B.C., and in the same role he started at 20 years ago: special teams coordinator.

B.C. Lions vs. Winnipeg Blue BombersMcEvoy was working in football operations when Benevides arrived from the Calgary Stampeders along with Wally Buono. He would up as his assistant when Benevides took over special teams.

“We wanted to have someone who had experience, he was able to pick up the reins and go. That position is very important to Canadian football; special teams is a third of the whole, if not more, and so just having someone with a lack of experience run that group would not cut it. He’s been a head coach, defensive coordinator in this league and a positional coach. I really think he’s special.”

“The walls are littered with pictures and memories,” he said. “Neil laughs at me all the time … He goes, ‘I used to just look at the pictures of you on the hall. Now you’re actually here.’“But at the core of it, I just love teaching. That’s what coaches are — teachers who love the game. I feel really fortunate, blessed, because I love this league, I love what we do. And I’m a fortunate Canadian kid who’s been coaching in this league for almost 25 years.

The first step was to learn the players’ names; coming in just the day before the Lions’ final pre-season game didn’t give him much time. He knew Terry Williams from his time in Ottawa, and McEvoy remembered enough from his time as Benevides’ assistant to know special teams were on lock for B.C. in 2003-07.
