Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning remains in the hunt to add another NCAA blueliner

The Vancouver Canucks defencemen are prize products of pursuing undrafted college free agents. The annual rite of passage to land those who can affordably augment an NHL roster is why Jim Benning isn’t done propping up the back end after signing Princeton blueliner Josh Teves, 24, who attended the Canucks’ prospects camp in 2018, to a contract Tuesday.

Restricted free agent Derrick Pouliot probably won’t get an extension and Luke Schenn is an unrestricted free agent. Prospect Olli Juolevi had season-ending knee surgery in December and the jury is still out on whether minor-leaguers Ashton Sautner or Guillaume Brisebois can make permanent NHL leaps.

It’s also why other teams aren’t waiting to land big college free-agent fish. Defencemen who can play at this level in the top-four mix are hard to find, hard to keep healthy and even harder to land via trade or free agency. However, college free agents can be a roll of the dice. They’re often undrafted for a reason, as opposed to being diamonds in the rough.

As for the Canucks, the late-blooming Tanev had a growing game and relationship with former Canucks director of player development Dave Gagner, who also served as Tanev’s roller-hockey coach. “I thought it was my best opportunity to go pro because I had a really good year and the team had a really good year — it was just all perfect timing,” recalled Tanev, who had 28 points in 41 games at RIT and has logged 444 career NHL games.
