Gritty winger has set career high for points, but is more concerned about winning
It’s the last thing the gritty Vancouver Canucks winger wanted to talk about and it’s the first impression he made as a key free-agent acquisition. Cut from an old-school cloth, he is loud and proud and blood and guts and all about the ‘we’ and not ‘me’.
“It’s brutal either way,” said Roussel. “And now, when you look at the standings, it’s hard. But we still have to take the bull by the horns and play for something — for the fans and for the team. The grit has to be there. You don’t want to go out there and play easy. When I do, I suck. Roussel can try to come across like Dr. Phil, but there’s no magical message to motivate players. It has to come from within.
And while they’ve beaten heavyweights like Tampa, Boston, Calgary, Toronto and Vegas, they’ve only won four of their last 17 games . Sustaining momentum is more about a lack of scoring skill than a wavering will because a 27th-ranked offence and 29th-rated power play are dragging the club down. Travis Green has often lauded Roussel, who’s second in league penalty minutes with 118, for dragging the Canucks into the competitive fight on many nights.
