Defeated vice presidential candidate Walden Bello was reportedly arrested on Monday for two counts of cyber liber charges filed by former Davao City Information Officer Jefry Tupas.

The case stemmed from the P10 million charges filed by Tupas against Bello in March this year when the latter brought up the issue of Tupas. It came after then Mayor Sara Duterte did not attend the recent Vice Presidential debate hosted by CNN Philippines. In a statement posted on Laban ng Masa Facebook Page, the group stated that Bello’s arrest is “obviously a case of a state-sponsored persecution and repression of the right to free expression.”

The group also said that the cyber libel case against Bello is “clearly proxy harassment with no less than Vice President Sara Duterte as the real protagonist. She uses a former aide as a cover for her vindictive behavior. Just as Ms. Duterte and her running mate and now President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. had repeatedly cowardly refused to participate in debates with other candidates, so she is now running true to form by putting up a dummy to file the charge against Dr. Bello.
