THE broad agriculture sector coalition Sinag urged the Department of Agriculture (DA) to check the “disconnect” between farmgate and retail prices prior to issuing import plans.

Cainglet said they would prefer that DA first consult the sectors and industries to know the extent and actual damage per commodity, the inventory and situation across the value chain, and possible collaboration of the agency and the agricultural industry. According to Cainglet, the farmgate price of galunggong at the consignation ranges between P120 and P180 per kilo, but the retail price stood at P320 per kilo.

He added that the BPI and HVCDP were tasked to provide the agriculture chief recommendations for possible strategies to augment supply within the week. “The priority is to get the vegetables from other vegetable-producing areas and regions. If that will be enough to temper the prices, there is no need to import. But if there’s a necessity to import, we will do that,” De Mesa said.
