Baseball Maple Leafs exec looking for a buyer to carry on 54-year tradition at Christie Pits
“It was a good business for a long time and Jack was great for the community,” Crawford said. “But we can’t replace Jack, a one-man super-force with sponsorship, advertising, promotion. He was old-school, going door-to-door, spending five hours in his living room working. He knew all the movers and shakers in Toronto, all the baseball, hockey, newspaper people.”
Crawford said there would be long-term marketing opportunities for the team and those interested in buying it. Regular attendees have been pushing many years for a beer garden on game days, perhaps one that could be sponsored by a brewery and stage pre- or post-game events Some sports historians insist the hockey team’s founder, Conn Smythe, scooped both ‘Leafs’ and the blue on white ‘T’ crest in 1927 from manager ‘Dapper’ Dan Howley’s ball team, which moved from Hanlan’s Point on Toronto Island to Maple Leaf Stadium the year before.
To defray costs, Jack, his wife Lynne and their volunteers were a familiar sight around the Pits during games, with jangling coffee pots full of coins collected for prize draws or straight-up donations. Theirs is still a hive of activity around the cramped green press box/announcer’s booth behind home plate.
