McCain and Maple Leaf ‘categorically reject’ suggestion former CEO had any awareness of anything improper, and say the company was not involved in price-fixing.

Canada Bread’s admission of guilt for its role in one of the country’s largest price-fixing scandals

McCain, in a statement to the Star on Friday, denied any involvement in price fixing, stating, “We have a culture that demands we act with absolute integrity and we would never act unlawfully and were absolutely not part of any co-ordinated effort to set the price of bread.” “Consistent with the position that he took on the last bread price increase, his point of view is that this is an acceptable strategy and they are aligned with it even in our meat categories,” the email said.

“Retailers hold suppliers accountable for the performance of the products they sell to that retailer,” Maple Leaf Foods said, explaining that this occurs through discussions about specific product categories, such as oral care or dairy, and that suppliers also negotiate items such as good shelf placement.

Asked about the document and its information on McCain, the Competition Bureau said confidentiality rules prevent it from saying anything more. The bureau also said this week that it continues to investigate alleged price-fixing by Maple Leaf Foods. After the guilty plea this week, Canada Bread’s new owner, Grupo Bimbo, said it was told nothing about “this prior conduct” during the sales process and was “considering all legal options against those responsible for the conduct.” Canada Bread reiterated that statement on Friday and offered no further comment.

The guilty plea did not name any specific executives, referencing only a “former senior officer,” who was CEO of Canada Bread and also a senior officer of Maple Leaf, who had discussions with one or more senior executives at Weston Foods.
