A deadly clash in Basilan between soldiers and armed groups, including one linked to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, has prompted a call for calm from Bangsamoro Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim. The incident occurred during the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao's 6th foundation anniversary celebrations, raising concerns about peace and stability in the region.

Bangsamoro Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim has appealed for calm following a deadly clash in Basilan between soldiers and armed groups, one of which is linked to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front . In a statement, Ebrahim expressed the Bangsamoro government's profound sorrow over the incident, noting that it occurred during the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao's (BARMM) 6th foundation anniversary celebrations.

'This incident is particularly disheartening as it transpired during the weeklong celebration of the 6th Foundation Anniversary of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), a period that symbolizes unity, peace, and progress in our region,' Ebrahim stated. He urged all parties to exercise restraint as efforts are underway to address the situation through appropriate channels. Ebrahim emphasized that established mechanisms within the peace process are the most effective platforms for resolution. He reiterated the Bangsamoro government's commitment to fully implementing the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) and all its provisions, including those outlined in the Annex on Normalization. 'These mechanisms have been instrumental in maintaining peace and stability and ensuring accountability on all sides... This commitment is the foundation of our shared aspiration for genuine and lasting peace in the Bangsamoro region,' he stated. The clash took place in Sumisip, Basilan, while the 32nd Infantry Battalion was providing security for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) personnel engaged in a peace and development project. Two armed groups attacked the battalion, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to 12 others. Reports indicate that two armed men were also killed in the encounter. Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. has called on the BARMM government to launch an investigation into the clash and assured BARMM residents that efforts are underway to maintain peace in the region. 'We also call on the leadership of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to conduct its investigation and help bring the perpetrators to justice,' Galvez stated in a press release.
