Baguio City, Philippines, has confirmed its first case of mpox, a contagious disease characterized by a painful rash. While the city official assures there is no need for panic, health protocols are urged to be followed.

A recent image provided by the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases shows a colorized transmission electron micrograph of monkeypox particles (red) found within an infected cell (blue), cultured in the laboratory that was captured and color-enhanced at the NIAID Integrated Research Facility in Fort Detrick, Md. Baguio City confirmed its first case of mpox, a contagious disease known for causing a painful rash, city officials reported on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

According to Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes of the City Health Services Office, the patient, a 28-year-old male, ‘was infected with the less severe Clade II (with subclades IIa and IIb) strain of the virus, not the deadly Clade I (with subclades Ia and Ib).’ While there is no need for panic or a lockdown, Mayor Benjamin Magalong urged the public to continue following health protocols, including wearing masks, physical distancing, and maintaining hygiene. The first confirmed case of mpox in the Philippines was reported on August 18, 2024, according to the Department of Health. The patient, a 33-year-old Filipino male from Manila, had no history of recent foreign travel. While the last recorded mpox case in the country occurred in December 2023, and all previous patients have fully recovered. While mpox remains a global health concern, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). A recent surge in cases, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries, has been linked to new strains, clades Ia and Ib. This follows a global outbreak of mpox in 2022 to 2023, caused by the clade IIb strain. Experts emphasize that vaccines are available for mpox and recommend vaccination alongside other public health measures to help control its spread.The most common symptoms of mpox include a skin rash or lesions, which can last two to four weeks, along with fever, headaches, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. Mpox can spread through close contact includes skin-to-skin (such as touching or sex) and mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-skin contact (such as kissing) with an infected person, contaminated objects, or infected animals. Additionally, during pregnancy, the virus can be passed to the fetus or newborn during or after birth
