Press freedom exists because of radicals who published far more outrageous things than Jeremy Clarkson’s tongue in cheek comments about Meghan Markle, argues Spiked editor Tom Slater.
The former Top Gear host wrote a column for Britain’s The Sun in which he described his hatred of the Meghan Markle and joked that he dreamed of her walking naked through “every town in Britain” while crowds change “Shame!” and throw excrement at her – a reference toThe column has sparked widespread outrage in the UK, with more than 20,000 complaints being sent to the UK’s Independent Press Standards Organisation and several politicians writing to the The Sun demanding nothing like this ever be...
“Yet time and again – particularly when it comes to Meghan Markle, it's going to be said – even nominal-liberals in this country seem to fail that test.” When asked why the backlash had been so bad, Mr Slater said Britain’s media class had a very strange relationship with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in particular.
“Because we live in an age of victimhood. If you claim to be a victim – no matter on what spurious grounds – you are kind of sanctified.”
