Averting a full-blown war in the Middle East
ISRAEL has dealt a 'hammer blow' to its arch-enemies, Hezbollah and Hamas. In Beirut, an Israeli missile strike killed Fuad Shukur, Hezbollah's top military commander. Just hours later, in Tehran, another missile, believed to have also been fired from Israel, killed Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniyeh. Not only did the two assassinations imperil negotiations for ending the war in the Gaza Strip, they also have raised fears of a full-blown war engulfing the Middle East .
Even before it took out Haniyeh and Shukur, the rampage by Israel's forces in Gaza has been unrelenting. Much of the urban infrastructure in the Palestinian enclave has been reduced to rubble. More than 30,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed and 70,000 wounded since the invasion that followed the cross-border attacks by Hamas on October 7 that killed 1,200 Israelis.
