The Sunswift 7 — crafted by a team of UNSW engineering students —set a new world record for fastest time over 1,000 km on a single charge, but almost didn't make it.
abc.net.au/news/solar-powered-car-unsw-sunswift-7/101790478An Australian-made solar-powered race car has narrowly set a provisional Guinness World Record in a 1,000 kilometre race, claiming the title with just six minutes to spare. The car suffered tyre and battery issues during the race, almost costing the UNSW team the record
The Sunswift 7 vehicle, created by a team of University of New South Wales engineering students, is now on track to hold the record for the fastest electric car to travel more than 1,000 kilometres on a single charge. The Sunswift 7, powered by a battery and solar panels on its roof and bonnet, completed 240 laps of Victoria's Australian Automotive Research Centre to complete the challenge, or the equivalent of driving further than Sydney to Melbourne.
"Two years ago, when we started to build this car, everything was going into lockdown and there were a lot of difficult moments."But the engineering students, led by former Red Bull Racing operations head UNSW Professor Richard Hopkins, faced significant challenges on race day, with one tyre puncture and a battery issue that forced a mid-track repair.
