Good morning and welcome to the live blog which is something of a Christmas politics special with the federal parliament returning to action today to pass the government’s energy legislation.
All the latest on that with my colleague Amy Remeikis in a short while but before then, here are a few stories making news overnight.looks at a report by Wollongong university professor Philip Laird who claims that the answer to the benighted Sydney-Melbourne rail link is to upgrade and straighten around 200km of outdated track to allow medium-speed trains,
. He reckons it would be a much cheaper alternative to high-speed links, could be ready in “four years”, and would also help Australia cut emissions by removing a lot of road freight.
