Anthony Albanese today explained the Voice referendum was one of the most consequential reforms he would pursue as prime minister.

The prime minister has given an impassioned plea for Australians to support the Voice in Canberra this morning.

“That’s not because of a lack of funds. It’s because governments have spent decades trying to impose solutions from Canberra rather than consulting communities. I know that every Australian wants to see our nation do better than this because our nation is better than this. A new clause to be inserted states: “The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws with respect to matters relating to the [Voice], including its composition, functions, powers and procedures.”“I want to thank sincerely all the members of the working group and all who have engaged with them,” Albanese said, flanked by Indigenous leaders.

It will be encouraged to advise the government early in the policymaking process. Members will have fixed terms and will be subject to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is with Indigenous Australians Linda Burney, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, Senator Patrick Dodson and the Referendum Working Group in Canberra.Caroline Schelle

This morning he praised the working group on the referendum when speaking to reporters at Queanbeyan.
