Australian National University defence expert John Blaxland says Australia has a “boutique defence force,” meaning it is “very good” at what it does but has “limited range.”

“If you want to be able to defend yourself and actually make a potential adversary think twice about doing something that’s going to confront you, you need something that is potentially

going to make life difficult for them,” Mr Blaxland told Sky News Australia.“If you can’t actually reach out and touch anybody of any consequence, then you leave yourself very, very vulnerable.”
