Millions of Australians will be able to access two months' supply of medication under a new policy change that will effectively halve the cost of their prescription.

Health Minister Mark Butler on Wednesday announced changes that will allow people to buy two months' supply of medication rather than one when they collect their script.

“This cheaper medicines policy is safe, good for Australians’ hip pockets and most importantly good for their health.” “We know patients are struggling to afford essential medicines as cost of living increases continue to bite the household budget and research tells us some patients are skipping medicines because of this — that just shouldn’t be happening. Today’s announcement effectively halves the costs of these medicines for patients.

Under the shift to 60-day dispensing, people will still pay the maximum $30 co-payment but receive double the amount of medication, effectively saving them up to $180 a year. Speaking with Sky News Australia on Wednesday, National President Trent Twomey warned the measure could lead to shortages as some medications were already in short supply.

“How do we give people extra when we can’t even give people the minimum amount that they need?" he said. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles told Sky News Australia the changes were a big win for household budgets after the government reduced the PBS co-payment from $42.50 to $30 earlier this year.
