Moves to recoup $15 billion in historic taxation debts has sparked criticism from two independent watchdogs.

Already a subscriber? The independent tax ombudsman has slammed the ATO for its handling of an estimated $15 billion in debts from small business and individuals, warning that government agencies must be transparent in chasing unpaid money and not cause unnecessary distress., the Tax Office unexpectedly began pursuing debts previously considered on hold or historical in late 2023, ranging from tiny amounts to tens of thousands of dollars, and sometimes dating back many years.

Among best-practice principles outlined by the new guidance are transparency and accountability, clear communication of what the debt relates to and how to seek a review, waiver or repayment plan. “We’re telling agencies that if you are collecting debts, you have an obligation to put the citizen at the heart of your interactions.”An ATO spokeswoman said in a statement in November 2023, the debts on hold awareness letter campaign had been paused, and a review is under way on communications with taxpayers.

Taxpayers are required to keep tax records for five years, and make them available in the case of audit or reassessment of annual returns.
