Music is in almost every beautifully curated bone of Soulshine resort in Bali, the newly amped-up brainchild of Bluesfest veteran Michael Franti.

A gecko on the wall chirps and hiccups, disrupting my efforts to still my brain during shavasana – my favourite part of yoga, as lying on the floor is the only thing I can do well. A soft breeze dances through the open-sided sala, carrying with it the scent of frangipani and the distant whine of motorbikes. I hear some guitar chords and a voice starts singing. I open my eyes and see Michael Franti, singing us awake.

“I took every penny I owned, maxed out my credit cards and built five rooms with a rooftop yoga studio in hopes that others would come there while I was away and experience the magic I felt in Bali,” he says. The result is spectacular, with 17 luxury Panorama View rooms and suites, two restaurants, The Stay Human Lounge and the Togetherness Lounge, and two new infinity pools, complete with swings, hanging chairs, day beds, cabanas and a waterslide. There is also a spa, an organic farm and two more rooftop yoga salas.

Another day we visit the Holy Springs at Tirta Empul, a World Heritage-listed site that dates back to 926 AD. We cover up with the provided green sarongs to take part in a water purification ritual, waiting at each of the 30 waterspouts to splash our faces and heads three times, dunking under the spout to pray, or just send good vibes to someone you think needs them.Afternoons are spent having a massage in the spa, or reading by the pool on a day bed or in a cabana.

The Panorama rooms feature handcrafted furniture, record players, Marshall Bluetooth speakers and guitars. I am staying in a Panorama Penthouse, with a king-size bed and views over the rice paddies from the room and the balcony. The terrazzo tub, in the middle of the space, is huge, and the bathroom is airy, with Sensatia Botanicals amenities and twin terrazzo basins. The resort’s premium accommodation, the Soulrocker Sky Suite, will be available to book from May next year.

A percentage of the price of every stay at Soulshine goes to the clinic, and as recently as last month the Frantis donated $US30,000 to buy a new ambulance.| Ubud, Bali, tel +62 85 333 499 499
