Indonesia is in damage control to preserve a tourist trade spooked by morality clauses in the country’s new criminal code.
| Bali’s governor has promised tourists that checks will not be conducted to see if couples are married before they can share a room, insistingLast week, Indonesia’s central government approved a conservative new criminal code that makes sex outside of marriage a criminal offence. Critics say this and other aspects of the code, such as possible jail terms for criticising the president, infringe on the right to privacy and freedom of speech.

In October, just over one in four of the 305,244 international tourists visiting Bali came from Australia.Expats living on the island say concerns about the new criminal code as it applies to foreigners have been overblown.
Much could change between now and then, noted Liam Hayes, a director of the Indonesia Institute and long-time Bali resident.
