Mr Speakman will not play an active role or advise people how to vote in the referendum, but he's called on the federal government to make some changes to the proposal in the face of poor polling.
At last week's Garma Festival, the prime minister pledged the vote would be held this year, although a date has not yet been set."I congratulate Mark Speakman, the leader of the Coalition in NSW, the opposition leader, for his very clear statements that he will be voting Yes and supporting Yes in the referendum campaign," he said.
"Recent polling suggests that the referendum is unlikely to succeed and that even if it does, it will only do so by a narrow majority," he said.Opposition leader Peter Dutton says the referendum should be abandoned if the federal government is unconvinced it will succeed.
