Artists Against Housing Alienation is representing Canada at the 2023 Venice Biennale of Architecture. Meet the two Torontonians involved. StarTogether

Venice Biennale of ArchitectureIn the late 1990s, the former munitions factory at 9 Hanna Ave. in Liberty Village was a not-entirely-legal haven where artists and other creative types could carve out affordable space to live and work. It was a time, Blackwell recalls, when Toronto, although already expensive, still felt like “a city with a lot of spatial possibilities. A rich, exciting space.”

“Living in the city over that time,” he says, “I’ve really watched it become unaffordable.” That’s a problem, he adds, being replicated across Canada, citing the lack of housing for Indigenous people in Vancouver. At a deeper level, Blackwell says, “Not for Sale!” also speaks to the origins of private property through the dispossession of Indigenous lands. AAHA members include Métis architect David Fortin and Nisga’a architect Patrick Stewart, who were part of Canada’s 2018 Venice Biennale entry, “,” which focused on Indigenous architects. Three professors of architecture at the University of British Columbia — Matthew Soules, Sara Stevens and Tijana Vujosevic — round out the team.

Three of these teams are in Toronto, and Blackwell is their liaison with AAHA. Each one addresses a problem at the heart of Toronto’s housing crisis: sky-high prices and the lack of affordable housing, homelessness and gentrification.
