When I head to the polls this October, I want to elect candidates who can actually deliver measurable progress on the most urgent issues plaguing Black voters: jobs, housing and post-pandemic economic recovery. Opinion by MsNadineSpencer

To combat this, candidates must advocate for more expansive home ownership programs that empower first-time buyers; for policies and initiatives that combat the underlying causes of core housing need; and for more affordable housing options in desirable areas.

Focusing on both employment and housing may contribute to a more even economic recovery for the Black community. Though the country as a whole continues to struggle in returning to its pre-COVID economic baseline, the equality gap has widened. Black workers have lost jobs or hours at higher rates, and many Black entrepreneurs were unable to qualify for federal pandemic relief or meet minimum collateral requirements for bank loans.

As other groups and business owners have bounced back, Black Canadians have been left behind. Candidates who win my vote will not only see these inequities, but solve for them with more targeted and personalized relief efforts, stronger support and investment in Black-owned businesses of all sizes, and more long-term initiatives designed to bolster generational wealth.

If Black Canadians succeed, we only stand to bolster the national economy and increase the country’s innovation, positioning us as an even greater power on the global stage. But if our leaders don’t act accordingly and we fail to elect more people who share our lived experiences, we’ll only preserve the status quo.

I’m reserving my support for politicians who are willing to break through glass ceilings and kick down doors — and who won’t just walk through those doors alone, but also bring all the people of this so-called multicultural Canada along for the journey.
