Dipayungi PBB, Komite Perundingan Antarpemerintah untuk Polusi Plastik berkumpul di Paris guna menyusun perjanjian yang mengikat terkait tata kelola polusi plastik.
NEGOSIASI SENGIT DI PARIS
Sebagai kontributor polusi skala besar dengan kepentingan signifikan pada minyak dan gas yang turut digunakan dalam pembuatan plastik, negara-negara seperti Amerika Serikat, Rusia, dan Arab Saudi menentang keras pembatasan maupun pelarangan produksi plastik. Prioritas mereka terletak pada upaya pembersihan limbah yang ada.
Sebelum pertemuan di Paris diadakan, PBB bulan lalu merilis laporan konklusif berisi langkah-langkah yang dapat diambil untuk mengurangi polusi plastik. Mematikan"keran plastik," sebagaimana diistilahkan oleh PBB, bisa menjadi salah satu aspek negosiasi yang paling menantang, sekaligus yang paling penting, menurut Faloutsos.
Belum lama ini, GWP dan Chatham House memperingatkan lewat satu makalah bahwa mekanisme perjanjian tersebut bukanlah solusi"sapu jagad"; diperlukan serangkaian kebijakan hulu hingga hilir berikut data yang lebih baik serta investasi di bidang infrastruktur. Misi berani dan ambisius tersebut telah mengarahkan organisasi ini ke salah satu sumber utama sampah plastik di lautan, yakni sungai-sungai di Asia.
