Top Rank chief Bob Arum sparked controversy by claiming that Japanese boxer Naoya Inoue's career surpasses that of Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao. While acknowledging Pacquiao's legendary status, Arum highlighted Inoue's undefeated record and his ability to conquer multiple weight divisions without a loss.

MANILA, Philippines — Japanese boxing star Naoya Inoue 's career is more legendary than that of Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao. This is the take of Top Rank chief Bob Arum , who previously promoted Pacquiao and now promotes Inoue, that raised eyebrows from many boxing fans especially Filipinos. 'Boxers are unique. Manny Pacquiao was a great, great champion, and was great for boxing. His career is legendary.

Naoya Inoue's career is even more legendary because unlike Manny he has gone through one division after another without losing a fight,' Arum said to Sky Sports. Arum, 93, further said that Inoue's fighting style is better than Pacquiao, stressing that the former is more disciplined and calculated while the latter was a bit reckless. 'Manny was reckless in a lot of fights and that's why he got knocked out in the last fight that he had with Marquez. Because he went in on the attack and didn't look out for an answering punch,' explained Arum. 'Inoue is a much more disciplined fighter. He is much more correct in the ring. He doesn't take foolish chances. Sometimes you do but usually he does not take foolish chances. I think that if it comes to the skillset, from a technical boxing standpoint, Inoue has it way over Manny Pacquiao. That's not to denigrate Pacquiao but it's just to say that in Inoue we have not only a ferocious knockout puncher but a very, very well trained technical fighter.' Inoue, 31, is indeed undefeated through 29 fights and won 26 of those matches through knockouts including his fourth round stoppage of Ye Joon Kim on January 24. He is also the undisputed champ in the bantamweight and super bantamweight divisions. Still, many fans called Arum's take as absurd, stressing that Pacquiao, now 46 years old, was already an 8-division world champ when he was Inoue's age. Fans also argued that Pacquiao, who had a 62-8-2 win-loss-draw pro record and last fought professionally in 2021, defeated big-name boxers on his way to becoming the world's only 8-division champ while Inoue, they said, topped 'no-name' boxers only. Antonio Margarito, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Miguel Cotto, Erik Morales, and Juan Manuel Marquez were just some of the names that Pacquiao defeated
