Nova Scotia-based mixed-media artist Ken Flett is launching the Artsplace member-in-residence program for 2023 and is hosting an exhibit at the gallery. | SaltWire

Flett begins the residency program Jan. 21 to Feb. 11, finishing with an exhibition through to Mar. 25.

Flett is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art with over 30 years of experience as a visual artist and educator. His early work focused on using large, mounted black-and-white photographs to create the base for his mixed-media paintings. Since 2012, Flett's work has focused on pieces created through stitching, embroidery and mosaic. The three-dimensional work includes sculptures, hand-sewn figures and recently hand-carved tabletop wood puppets and marionettes.

Flett said regardless of the medium, he is interested in making the invisible visible through his art and honouring the stories that would otherwise be lost and forgotten. “I have begun to explore the art form of puppetry, where I bring together all aspects of my creative practice to consider storytelling through this complex medium,” he said. The artist-in-residence always welcomes visits from the public, and as part of his residency, Flett is working to develop a simple wooden marionette for people without carving skills. It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
