Insisting that the country cannot afford a second wave of coronavirus infections, the government is expected to study carefully whether or not Metro Manila and other areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) can graduate to a lower classification after June 15.
Apart from the National Capital Region , other areas under GCQ from June 1 to June 15 are: Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, Central Visayas, Pangasinan, Zamboanga City, and Davao City. The rest of the country has been placed under MGCQ, the last of the four-tier quarantine classification imposed by the government before the shift to “new normal.”
The Modified General Community Quarantine status of the rest of the country will likewise be assessed if these places can shift to the “new normal” amid improving health indicators, Roque added. “We are still looking for some kind of data that would indicate that Metro Manila, if we give it more liberty so to speak under MGCQ, will not spark a second wave. We cannot afford a second wave and that is why we are looking at data that if we completely loosen up or almost completely loosen up, because there is no such thing as completely loosen up now, that the cases will not spike,” he added.
