Apple is set to launch its latest budget iPhone model, rumored to be the iPhone SE, on Wednesday. The new device is expected to feature upgrades in design, performance, and AI capabilities, aiming to compete in the mid-range smartphone market.
Apple is poised to unveil its latest budget-friendly iPhone model on Wednesday, aiming to capture a larger share of the mid-range smartphone market and counter the competitive pressures from rivals such as Samsung and China's Huawei.
The fourth iteration of the lower-cost model, widely anticipated as the iPhone SE, will directly challenge popular Android smartphones, arriving at a time when consumer electronics manufacturers are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) tools into their devices. The current generation of iPhone SE, released in 2022, carries a price tag of $429, and the upcoming version is expected to command a premium over its predecessor. The iPhone 16, launched in September, starts at $799 for the base model. 'If the SE 4 delivers significant enhancements in design, performance, and AI capabilities, it could revitalize its market appeal and solidify Apple's presence across diverse price segments,' stated Varun Mishra, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.Apple recently projected robust sales growth, indicating that the company is on track to rebound from a decline in iPhone sales as it expands the availability of artificial intelligence features to more regions and languages in the coming months. However, analysts have expressed reservations about the extent to which these AI tools might contribute to sales growth, as Apple's implementation of AI features is planned in phases for certain regions on its latest iPhone 16 lineup and the iPhone 15 Pro model.According to Counterpoint Research, the SE model's share of total iPhone revenue has dwindled from 10% since its introduction in 2016 to approximately 1% last year. This year's update is anticipated to overhaul its slab-design, eliminate the physical home button, and introduce Face ID functionality, alongside camera and processor upgrades to support AI features, as suggested by analysts and media reports. Notably, the SE model would be the last iPhone to adopt the USB Type-C port for charging, diverging from its proprietary Lightning connector. Apple has already discontinued the current SE and iPhone 14 in the European Union because these products fail to comply with local regulations mandating the USB Type-C charging standard. The latest SE model would enable Apple to re-enter the EU market
