Apple has temporarily disabled a feature that used AI to generate news headlines and summaries after facing criticism for inaccuracies. The company aims to restore the feature once it's functioning correctly.

SAN FRANCISCO, California — Apple issued a software update on Thursday that disabled news headlines and summaries generated using artificial intelligence (AI) that had been criticized for providing inaccurate information. This move by the tech giant comes as it enhances its latest product lineup with 'Apple Intelligence' in a market eager for assurance that the iPhone maker remains a formidable contender in the AI race.

Apple's decision to temporarily suspend the newly launched AI feature follows complaints from the BBC and other news organizations about users receiving headlines or news summary alerts that were riddled with errors or completely wrong. Apple deployed the update to developers working with a beta version of its software, effectively sidelining the AI feature for news headlines. The tech giant intends to reactivate the feature once it is functioning correctly and eventually make it available to all users. Apple unveiled new iPhones equipped with generative AI in June of last year as part of its strategy to stimulate sales and demonstrate its ability to keep pace in the technological competition. The company has high expectations for the new iPhone 16 and hopes that customers will be drawn to the latest models due to their enhanced AI capabilities. 'We are thrilled to introduce the first iPhones designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence and its groundbreaking capabilities,' stated Apple CEO Tim Cook at an event held at the company's Silicon Valley headquarters. 'Apple Intelligence' represents a new suite of software features designed for all devices, which was announced at the company's annual developers conference, where it also revealed a partnership with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.In the immediate future, the new capabilities include AI-powered image editing, translation, and subtle, creative enhancements in messaging. However, they do not encompass the more ambitious breakthroughs promised by other AI players, such as OpenAI or Google. These features align with tools recently released by Meta, Microsoft, and Google, which can produce well-crafted content by simply posing queries in everyday language. Google introduced AI-infused Pixel 9 smartphones last year as a challenge to the iPhone. Pixel phones hold a minuscule share of the global smartphone market, which is dominated by Samsung and Apple, but Google contends that its new line offers a chance to demonstrate what AI can realistically deliver for customers. Samsung has also showcased AI across its product range and is expected to unveil a new flagship Galaxy smartphone at an event next week in Silicon Valley
