THE Philippines is a sachet economy, with Filipinos favoring single-use plastic packaging for basic essentials because of its affordability and accessibility. An estimated 163 million plastic sachets are produced daily in the country, the World Bank estimates. This translates to almost 60 billion per year, with about 75 percent leaking into the environment. Globally, the Philippines has been named consistently as among the biggest plastic polluters, even ranking first.

According to Ozaki, maintaining affordability while changing to more sustainable packaging materials is another major consideration. The Saricycle program, launched in January 2024 with Quezon City as pilot, partners with sari-sari store owners in tackling the plastic waste problem. SariCyclers, as participants are called, earn 'good as cash' environmental points for plastics they collect. They can use the points to buy daily basic needs at partner stores.
