Rachel MacFarlane was a longtime community organizer in Antigonish. - ContributedANTIGONISH, N.S. — She couldn’t just drive by like most of the rest of us.
A fundraising dance she’d booked for the Antigonish Legion on Nov. 19 will go ahead, now raising funds to support the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society’s community navigator in her memory. Applications filled with the stories of people trying to make ends meet amongst harsh economic realities poured in. While Rachel was glad to regale friends with the story of helping the skunk with the cup on its head, it was only through back channels that Colleen heard of how she went far beyond the role of a board member — helping a single mother clean her home, others navigate the paperwork of institutions.
Rachel took over as chair last year as the society pushed ahead fundraising, designing and building another 12-unit complex on Appleseed Drive. Again her life became intertwined with the new tenants as construction delays saw her arranging temporary housing until they could move in.
