Starting Jan. 9, unsegregated garbage will not be collected in Angono and violators will be penalized.

This warning has been the subject of the regular information dissemination drive by the Angono Municipal Environment and Resources Office following the implementation of the local ordinance on waste segregation.

Gilbert Merino, acting officer of MENRO, told Manila Bulletin that the policy of No-Segregation, No-Collection on garbage is in compliance with Municipal Ordinance No. 08-561 or the Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Ordinance that calls for the proper waste segregation in the entire municipality. Merino said dry waste should be segregated from wet ones but sanitary napkins, diapers, face masks, and other hazardous wastes should have separate garbage bags. The office of Mayor Jeri Mae Calderon also said that the ordinance complies with Republic Act 9003 or the Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and with the local government’s Zero Basura Program.

MENRO chief, Alan Maniaol, had earlier said that the local government could save more if proper waste segregation will be practiced down to the household level as the municipal government will not have to spend more on garbage collection and dumping since garbage will be recycled through various ways if not at one’s residence or at the materials recovery facility of each barangay.
