Daniel Andrews has responded to Gina Rinehart's support for the Gold Coast to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games which Victoria cancelled, as negotiations over the axed event drag on.
Mining magnate Gina Rinehart on Thursday backed in the Queensland city's push to hold the games which the Victorian Premier cancelled last month.
Victoria had budgeted $2.6 billion for the games after being confirmed as hosts last year but costs quickly spiralled to between $6 and $7 billion. "I think building 1,300 homes in regional Victoria, for Victorians forever, is much more important than building temporary accommodation for athletes and officials for just 12 days.
"We can deliver all the legacy and more for far less, far, far less than what these games would have cost us, and we have been able to dodge a $4 billion extra price tag, an extra bill, which is frankly money that if we've got it, it can be invested elsewhere." When pressed for an update on negotiations, Mr Andrews on Thursday would only say:"They are moving".
