A “tornado-like storm” left a trail of destruction in Victoria, thick fog grounded planes, and more rain might be coming, but the temperature is also set for a sharp rise in coming days.

Emergency services received hundreds of calls for help after a “tornado-like storm” left thousands of people without power near Shepparton and large hail blanketed Geelong’s northern suburbs.

“Our teams are working hard to get customers on their way as quickly as possible,” a Jetstar spokesman said. “We know these disruptions are frustrating, especially this close to Christmas, but safety is our top priority.” “We’ve got very thick fog. I’ve just watched an aircraft take off, and it disappeared into a cloud of fog about halfway down the runway, which is slowing things down significantly,” he told 3AW.“There’s been a lot of airborne holding, so circling if you like, for domestic flights coming into Melbourne because of the fog. We can’t get the same number of aircraft on the runways as we usually would.”

“Craigieburn and Tatura took the lion’s share of those requests for assistance,” the SES spokesman said. He said a significant part of Tatura was hit by the wild weather, along with north-east parts of greater Shepparton, but thankfully no one was injured and damage to homes was limited. But for those in the northern suburbs, the trough that triggered the downpour and storms would be hanging around.“We could see some more storms occur into this afternoon but it’s not going to be as broad an area as yesterday,” Thomas said.
