Victoria has started the formal re-establishment of the state-owned State Energy Commission , transferring it to a new ministry and creating a specialist panel of experts.
“It will be 100 per cent renewable energy owned by Victorians and powered by Victorians,” said D’Ambrosio, also the state’s energy minister, at a press conference at the Electrical Trades Union headquarters. Former Liberal premier Jeff Kennett, who oversaw the privatisation to pay off debt accumulated under the previous Labor government, labelled Andrew a “socialist” premier and said the SEC’s return was fiscally irresponsible. Former opposition leader Matthew Guy described it as a “thought bubble”.
The commission would deliver an estimated 25 gigawatts of the additional renewable energy and firming capacity – such as batteries – that would be required to enable Victoria’s transition away from fossil fuels and to meet its renewable targets, he said.
