A look at old campaigns and new concerns in Newfoundland and Labrador

On May 8, 1990, the PC opposition questioned the governing Liberals on their progress implementing the promised legislation. A great deal of time was spent explaining the work of the Joint Pay Equity Steering Committee, but no timeframe was given for when legislation would be brought forward.“I understand the Liberal party in its campaign, according to its brochure, intended to bring in legislation to deal with pay equity,” said then-Opposition House Leader Len Simms.
There was renewed pressure on the government to implement the legislation. For a while, ministers insisted they were taking the time to get it right, and to learn from other provinces, yet there’s a folder in the legislative library containing research that was done in this province on the topic in the late 1980s.In October last year, the legislation was tabled. A 33-year-old promise was delivered. However, the Pay Equity and Pay Transparency Act came with a slew of new concerns.
