THE unprecedented impeachment of the second-highest official of the land by the House of Representatives has once again revived Filipinos' consciousness on impeachment.Impeachment is a process in which certain high-ranking government officials may be removed from office upon conviction in an impeachment trial on certain offenses, namely culpable violation of the Constitution, treason, bribery, graft and corruption, other high crimes, or betrayal of public trust.
But the Senate is empowered by its own rules to determine when to begin the trial while it is in session per Senate Resolution #39, Resolution Adopting the Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Cases. In Section III thereof, it provides that 'the Senate shall specify the date and time for the consideration of such articles and shall continue in session from day to day until final judgment is rendered x x x.'In a media conference, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
