Salvador Sierra is a self-taught artist. Lacking formal training, he enrolled in a short vocational course at Helping Foundation in 1997 and finished as Most Outstanding Student in the art-and-sign program. A year later he joined a Fernando Sena workshop, again earning top honors.
Recognition came quickly. He was a Philippine Art Awards finalist in 2000, won an on-the-spot contest at Luneta in 2001, received an honorable mention in Metrobank’s MADE contest in 2003, placed third in the AAP annual competition in 2006 and took a major MADE prize in 2009. He has since reached the finals of the Luxembourg Art Prize and World Wide Art Competition, among many other local and international art competitions.Sierra had his first solo exhibit in 2011, titled 'Magnum Opus.
Two decades later those lessons resurfaced when a toy-collector turned resort owner asked Sierra to build a 25-foot King Kong in concrete. Sierra assembled a crew of welders, masons and fellow artists, and the project’s success led to even larger commissions: a 75-foot T-Rex, a Spinosaurus, Ice Age animals and a Flowerhorn fish in Cuenca, Batangas.
