Charlotte Yorston and Eleanor Smith beginning to unpack books for the Pictou County Y Service Club Women’s annual book sale to be held Aug. 21-30 at Bluenose Curling Club. Rosalie MacEachernNEW GLASGOW, N.S. — Ten pallets of books unpacked at the start of the sale, and another 10 pallets of books packed up when it ends. For 51 consecutive years, that has been the success story of the Pictou County Y Service Club Women’s annual book sale.
“We were looking for a fundraiser back in 1972 and a woman who had moved here from Fredericton suggested a book sale. Elsie Locke thought it was a wonderful idea and the rest of us thought it was worth a try,” said Yorston. “These days our books are shrink-wrapped onto pallets and Joe’s son, Jimmy Gennoe, still stores our books. He very kindly moves them from our old trailer into a much newer one and transports them to us every year. He loads and unloads the pallets with a hydraulic lift so that labour and support means a great deal to us.”
Eleanor Smith, who became involved in the sale 14 years ago, said they have many repeat customers, including many who come from Truro and Antigonish. Authors such as Tom Clancy, James Patterson, David Baldacci, Elizabeth George and PD James are always popular but Smith has noticed an increased interest in Canadian mystery writer Louise Penny.Yorston added there is nothing more pleasing to club members than seeing a young child down on the floor, thoroughly engrossed in a book.
