Amelita Lara, wife of the late Councilor Alex Lara, was sworn in as the new councilor of Naga City, Cebu. Governor Garcia administered the oath at the Provincial Capitol.
Amelita Lara took her oath as the new councilor of Naga City , Cebu before Governor Gwendolyn Garcia at the Provincial Capitol on Monday, January 13, 2025. Amelita stepped into the role vacated by Councilor Alex Lara , who passed away in November 2024. Under Section 45(a)(3) of Republic Act (RA) 7160, the Local Government Code of 1991, the governor of Cebu has the authority to appoint someone to fill a vacant position on the City Council due to valid and legal reasons, such as death.
Lara's family believes that Amelita will continue the programs and services her late husband had started. Dan Lara, the son of the new councilor, expressed his sentiments on social media: 'And unexpectedly, my quiet, kind, and humble mother became the new councilor of Naga City. Everything happens for a reason. There is a reason why you were chosen to continue what papa left behind.'
